The Group looks at various historical aspects of military and government security, including assassins and traitors. Our subjects for discussion have included the role of Lord Walsingham, Spymaster to Elizabeth 1st; the Gunpowder Plot; and the immense significance of the Portland Spy Ring. Robert Childer's novel "Riddle of the Sands" was a focus for debate at another meeting, and more recently we have explored the personal qualities needed to be a spy. We have also discussed the MI5 exhibition 'Official Secrets' at the National Archive Kew and Klaus Fuchs, the physicist and spy.
